SOS BOOK Chapter 78: Strategy #14. Engaging executive control.

HOW DO WE BEST CONTROL OUR MIND?

How do we achieve optimal control over the biological supercomputer in our brain? How do we harness the immense power and resources of our extended mind? Effective executive control is the key, so this is an important strategy for success.

OUR BRAIN CONNECTS TO A WIDER NETWORK.

As CEO of our mind, we have a considerable responsibility. As in business, this requires that we understand how our mind is organized. We should appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of each division.

We are the CEO of the supercomputer that is our brain. But this computer is also an access terminal to a much wider network, which is much like the internet. This network is full of information, intelligence, wisdom & other valuable resources. That network can be thought of as our ‘extended mind’. Our extended mind connects to the universal mind which can be thought of as the repository of all possibilities!

MOST PEOPLE REJECT INSTRUCTIONS OR HELP.

Unfortunately, no-one has given us the operating instructions for accessing and managing this system. There were no classes for this at school or college! We might imagine such an instruction manual to be big and complex! But if we were to find these instructions somewhere, would we even trust them? Would we actually study and use them?

Since executive control is such a complex topic, would an instruction manual help? Most people dislike instruction manuals. They would rather learn as they go! They hope that will be sufficient.

MANY AREN’T COMFORTABLE SEEKING HELP.

Some don’t want to appear inadequate by using or requesting additional help. Others are fearful of anything complex or are just too lazy. Many believe they don’t need instructions or a manual for their mind. They think they already know how to use it, based on their lifetime of experience! However, our apparent familiarity with this sophisticated technology camouflages the true situation.

…Are you comfortable seeking advice on optimizing your mind?

THE BODY IS JUST OUR BRAIN’S POWER SUPPLY.

Let’s look at a few of the consequences of ignoring the instruction manual. Many spend their whole life preoccupied with their human body. But this is just the computer’s power supply! They either want to build their body up or try to slim it down. They regularly spend time decorating or adorning it with fine fashion. Many compete over who has the best-looking power supply!

…Do you focus more attention on your body than your mind?

OUR SENSES CAN BECOME A DISTRACTION.

Sometimes, instead of just obsessing with the power supply, we become engrossed with the computer’s peripherals – our five senses! We indulge our senses with excesses of all kinds, such as food, sex & drugs.

We also create all kinds of internal movies and drama with this high quality visual, audio & sensory input. We can even create fantasies with our supercomputer. We produce 3d videos or even video games, where we can feature and be the star. Plus, we keep watching the movie reruns time and time again.

OUR BRAIN CAN ACCESS UNIVERSAL RESOURCES.

Our human bodies are a mere housing for something much more valuable, our mind. Our brain is a biological supercomputer. But our brain is just an access terminal for something far greater. It connects to our extended mind which in turn has further access to the universal mind. This means our brain potentially has access to all the resources of the entire universe! Just imagine what you could do with that!

…Are you interested to learn more about these extended resources?

OUR INCREDIBLE POTENTIAL IS OFTEN WASTED.

We usually set our supercomputer’s functionality to the lowest levels and then just idle. Plus, we run most of our life on autopilot. So, we idle and give away our control. We waste our power and potential! We fail to utilize and develop our strongest resource. We don’t use our management position as CEO to reach our full capacity. We fail to make a real difference for those around us.

…Are you keen to use your supercomputer to its maximum potential?

WHAT DOES BEING A GOOD CEO LOOK LIKE?

Clear, definitive, executive action is what it takes to be a good CEO. This includes having the correct goals. A good CEO has a plan, as well as potential strategies to put that plan into action. They also need commitment, courage, compassion & wisdom.

But how would this work in practice? We could start by being:

● more mindful of our emotions & feelings.

● more aware of our own thinking and the consequences.

● more clear about the motivations for our choices.

● more conscious of any bias or habit that’s crept in.

● more impartial in our observations of ourselves and others.

● more wary of unhelpful and compensatory behavior.

INCREASE YOUR CONSCIOUS DECISION MAKING.

But too often we just don’t apply the simple action plan above! Instead, we get distracted by all the minutiae and the trivia of our daily existence. We get caught up in the drama of current events. Plus, all the relationship issues and personal power plays.

When appropriate, we can take back control over decision making from our subconscious mind. We should be conscious of when we delegate control and why. We aim to increase the percentage of the day when we are fully conscious and aware of our decision making. Most importantly we watch out for self-sabotage and the pervasive influence of the ego. It’s that simple!

…What proportion of the day are you fully conscious and aware?

DON’T HAND OVER CONTROL TO YOUR EGO.

If we neglect our role as CEO, our ego will take over our subconscious mind and run most of our life. Without us really noticing, we can unintentionally hand over authority and control to our ego. Then, we become CEO in name only! The real power has been subtly shifted to the ego! By making the above mistakes, we fail to utilize our mind’s higher faculties. We avoid our true capacity and deny our unique potential.

…Have you unintentionally given control of your mind to your ego?

ACHIEVE SUCCESS THROUGH THE EXTENDED MIND.

In general, we only run our supercomputer at about 1% of its true potential. This prevents us from creating a joyful and meaningful life. Sometimes we increase this to up to 10% when we are fueled with creative passion. By fully using our supercomputer, we can design a whole new personal reality. We can build a grand new future using our supercomputer with its extended mind connections.

…What percent of your capacity do you think you are currently utilizing?

WE HAVE A TREASURE CHEST & HOLD THE KEY.

Sadly, we usually don’t appreciate our true inner power. We don’t actively pursue our potential. Even if we have some vague notion of this, we don’t really know what to do. Understanding these principles is the key to unlocking our whole destiny. It’s like we are sitting on a huge treasure chest of gold bullion all our life, but we never open the box. We don’t realize we already have the key.

…Do you sense that you have an untapped treasure inside you?

WILL YOU FULLY COMMIT TO THE CEO ROLE?

Achieving all this does not require a large intellect or fancy education. But we must realize the need for change, and then accept responsibility for this. In summary, the key to unlocking our vast potential is learning to control and drive our mind. We must realize we are essentially the CEO and hence totally responsible for our success or failure. This executive function is an essential strategy for success.

…Do you see how important it is to take responsibility as CEO of your mind?

But when taking executive control, it is important to be efficient. So how do we increase our productivity? We discuss this strategy for success in the next chapter.
