Understanding Dyslexia

In the past, some children who had difficulty reading were thought to have a lower intelligence level or were considered to be underachievers. In recent years, many of these youngsters were thought to have undiagnosed dyslexia, a learning disorder whose chief symptom is an impaired ability to recognize and comprehend written words or symbols. If you think your child may be suffering from dyslexia, you first need to understand what the disorder is and some of the symptoms that it can produce.

Dyslexia is a problem that involves cortical (higher) processes of symbols in the brain, although the cause of the disorder has not yet been determined. Recent research has indicated that this condition may be genetic. In 1999, researchers at the Centre for Reading Research which is located in Norway studied eighty members from one family over four generations and discovered several family members that all suffered from dyslexia. These researchers report that a flaw in chromosome 2 can lead to difficulties processing information in the “normal” manner and can lead the development of dyslexia. Other chromosomes that may be involved with the development of the disorder are chromosome 1, chromosome 15, and chromosome 6. These experts hope that by doing further research into the genetic aspect of the disorder that they will be able to diagnose and treat dyslexia at a much earlier stage. At the present time, most children are diagnosed with the disorder at the third grade level, although some other youngsters have “slid through” their academic careers and have reached high school before a diagnosis has been made.

It is estimated that about fifteen to twenty percent of the United States population has a learning disability that involves difficulties with languages. Seventy to eighty percent of these people have problems in the areas of reading, although it is questionable whether all these suffer from dyslexia or just a deficit in their style of learning. The majority of dyslexia patients are male and the disorder affects all ages, races, and income groups equally.

There are several symptoms that are exhibited by a child who suffers from dyslexia. He may problems identifying single words and has difficulties in spelling such as “switching” (transposing) the letters in a word, so that he may write “huose” for the word “house.” The child may exhibit difficulty with his handwriting as well as in areas that deal with reading comprehension. There may be apparent difficulties with spoken language, such as the child not understanding oral directions. He may also not understand the concept of opposites, such as on/off and inside/outside. The child may not understand the sounds in particular words, as well as not being able to identify the order of sounds as well as words that rhyme with one another. He may also have difficulty with words that are similar, such as “collision” and “conclusion.” If you ask the child to write the word “collision,” he may write the word “conclusion.” Yet if you ask him to define the word, he will give you the right definition.

If you feel that your child may be suffering from dyslexia, you should contact your family doctor as soon as possible. There are numerous tests that he can schedule to determine if your child has the disorder. The sooner you get your dyslexic child the help- that he needs, the sooner he can be given the special training and tools that he will need to become a successful reader.

Understanding ADD And ADHD

In the past, children that ignored their elders and could not seem to sit still were considered to be rambunctious or out of control and were oftentimes punished for their behavior. Thanks to research and advances made in modern medicine, doctors have discovered that children that display this kind of behavior may be suffering form ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).

Both of these conditions are a neurological disorder that affects a person’s ability to control their spontaneous responses. These responses include movement, speech, and attentiveness. It is estimated that 3 to 5 percent of children in the United States suffers from ADD/ ADHD. In other words, in a normal elementary school class chances are there is at least one child that has ADD/ADHD. The disorder occurs more frequently in boys and many parents who suffer from the disorder have children who also have it.

These disorders can be divided into three categories. In the first subdivision, the child is described as being predominately inattentive, which means that the child has difficulty focusing on one thing or may just sit there quietly with his mind being miles away. The second subdivision describes children as predominately hyperactive-impulsive. Children that fit into this category are hyperactivity and also display problems moving forward from one task to the next. The third subdivision of ADD/ADHD is combined inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive. Children in this category display behaviors that are described in both of the other subdivisions. You should keep in mind that all small children display these symptoms from time to time. The children that display these symptoms on a daily basis should be checked by your family doctor to determine if ADD/ADHD is present.

There are several symptoms that you as a parent can look for to determine if your child may be suffering from ADD/ADHD. You should observe your child as he performs tasks or engages in conversations. If he becomes easily distracted or has difficulty keeping his mind focused on the issue at hand, he may be suffering form ADD/ADHD. If your child gets bored with a task before it is complete or makes mistakes and skips over details you may want to get him checked. If he is disorganized and forgets things easily, these are also symptoms of the disorder. In conversations, an ADD/ADHD child will have difficulty listening when an adult is speaking directly to them and oftentimes he will be unable to maintain direct eye contact for any amount of time.

Most children become diagnosed with ADD/ADHD once they have entered school as the symptoms become much more apparent. In the classroom setting, this child may have difficulties listening to instructions and may be unable to focus his attention on a task for a long enough period of time that it requires to complete that chore. He may have trouble sitting without squirming and fidgeting and may talk excessively. The child may also try to answer questions before the teacher is done asking them and can be generally disruptive in the learning environment. Keeping in close contact with your child’s teacher can help you quickly evaluate if your child may be suffering from ADD/ADHD. If you feel that your child may be suffering from ADD/ADHD, you should consult your family doctor. Between you and your doctor you should be able to come up with the best treatment program for your child.

There are some positive traits that ADD/ADHD children display. They tend to be more creative and mentally flexible. These children are also energetic and there is never a dull moment when you spend time with them. Many of these children are also highly intelligent and artistically gifted.

If your child is diagnosed with ADD/ADHD it is not the end of the world. Most of the negative symptoms are treatable through medication or behavior management. As a parent, you can strive to encourage your child in the areas that interest him. By helping your child channel all his extra energy in this manner, you may find that you have a future Van Gogh or Einstein on your hands. It’s something to think about.

Understanding Hyperlexia

While many people have heard of dyslexia, most do not know what hyperlexia is. This disorder is basically the opposite of dyslexia and often goes undiagnosed as it is more difficult to determine.

Hyperlexia is a learning disorder that involves children who exhibit an above normal ability to read at a very young age while their communication and comprehension skills are below normal. In other words, a child may begin reading full sentences at a very early age (some as early as two) while not fully comprehending or having the ability to perform a simple verbal retell of the information that he has just read. Most parents of these children have reported that they did not teach the child to read and were surprised when the child began to pick up the ability on their own.

While some children that begin reading before preschool age are not hyperlexia and have no difficulties in school, hyperlexic children have problems with reading comprehension as well as difficulties with learning phonics. For children who are beginning to read, phonics are an important key to help them figure out words that they are not familiar with by “sounding” the words out. Children with this disorder recognize words from memory and thus have difficulties when they come across words that they have never seen before.

Hyperlexia also affects a child’s verbal skills. Children who suffer from this disorder have a fixation with letters and words but have significant difficulty with spoken language. A hyperlexic child may be able to read a whole story at a very young age, but when questioned about the information that he has read, he is unable to understand what he has read clearly. He will especially have difficulty answering the “W” questions-who, what, when, how, and why. Teaching the child to comprehend material after he has been reading for several years can be a long and difficult process.

Due to his fascination with the written word, a hyperlexic child often does not interact well with others. He may exhibit abnormal and awkward social skills and have problems relating to his peers. The child may have difficulties engaging in conversations. This may be due to the fact that many of these children learned to read by repetition, a process that they carry over into verbal conversation. This child may be able to repeat spoken words that he has just heard, but does not do well when asked to express his own thoughts or opinions.

A child suffering from hyperlexia may also display an exaggerated need to follow a routine and may become upset if that routine is disrupted. He also may have difficulties making transitions from one task to another. This symptom is especially apparent in the classroom setting, where the child is expected to finish one task and then move on to the next. The youngster may become emotionally upset or may just refuse to make this transition.

If you feel that your child may be suffering from hyperlexia, you should contact your family doctor. You should be warned, however, that the identification and study of hyperlexia is a relatively new field. If you have an older doctor, he may not be familiar with the condition. As most children are diagnosed with hyperlexia once they have entered school, you can contact your school psychologist who should have information and a list of specialists that you can talk to decide the best educational program for your child.

Early intervention is the best treatment in dealing with hyperlexia. The younger that the child is when he is diagnosed will make it easier to retrain his mind to read in a different manner that will improve his comprehension and verbal skills. These are two important factors to having a successful academic career.

When 100% Hoodia extracts are taken as suggested, people usually start losing weight in three or for days. Hoodia has no typical side effects like traditional diet pills. Since its popularity several brands offering Hoodia diet pills have opened their doors. Want to lose weight in the most convenient and natural way this diet may be the one that you are looking for. Hoodia is also a much easier way of reducing one’s calorie intake.

The Hoodia diet’s main ingredient is a plant which makes it 100% natural and therefore safe.

Dieters should make their own research first and make sure that the manufacturers they are buying the diet pills from are verified. The plant is not that abundant in the Kalahari dessert. Be careful ? there are manufacturers selling inferior Hoodia products that contain little or no Hoodia at all. Hoodia patches for example is spotty at this time. Beware the FDA has shut all ?Diet Patches? down due to unproven claims. Only products containing Certified 100% Hoodia Gordonii are viewed as effective appetite suppressants.

Fortunately Hoodia also comes in different brands and forms. 100% Certified Hoodia Extract is the best available for proven weight loss.
