What to see in Crete
The beautiful and historic Greek island of Crete is a great place to visit to learn about Greek culture and history. However, there is something for all types of tourists on Crete. Some may prefer the more populous tourist attractions, luxurious accommodations and beaches, while some may prefer the more authentic feel of the ancient Minoan ruins.
The Minoan ruins around the island of Crete are truly an exceptional and rare sight. There are many different sites throughout the island. One of the most popular and breathtaking is the Palace of Knossos, in Heraklion. While the original palace was built in approximately 2,000 BC, it was subsequently destroyed and rebuilt in even grander fashion. It is this massive palace that remains and can be visited and walked around.
Chania is another spot to see on a Crete holiday. Smaller than Heraklion, this town of 55,000 is located in the northwest part of the island. Be sure to see the Old Town while you’re there, there are walls (and the harbor there) dating from the times of Venetian influence on the island. In the newer parts of the city, the Courthouse, the clock tower on Dimokratias Street, and the Public Gardens are all worth a look.
One interesting activity is visiting and hiking the Samaria Gorge National Park. The Samaria Gorge National Park will provide absolutely stunning views and an amazing, pristine feel. However, be prepared that the hike is long and the sun can be very intense. Be prepared to spend an entire afternoon hiking the Samaria Gorge and be sure to bring shoes that will support the rocky paths and long trail.
The village of Loutro has become a very popular spot for tourists of Crete to visit. The historical village can be a fun afternoon activity of walking around and enjoying the local shops and sights, or it can be an exclusive resort spa to spend several days relaxing and enjoying life to the fullest. These are just a sampling of the many places, historical sites, villages and activities that Crete has to offer.
Crete is the largest Greek island and one of the largest islands in the Mediterranean. With its stellar climate it can be quite a busy tourist spot during various seasons throughout the year. Although it is an island, it is easy to get to. You can either board one of the many ferries or tour ships or catch a flight from the mainland of Greece or various other places.
So, if you are planning a Crete holiday, make sure to include these cities on your list of places to see. They each hold many historical sites and cultural attractions that will make your visit to Crete unforgettable. Take advantage of your holiday in Crete and submerse yourself in this unique island.
