How To Choose Your Coffee Grinder Well

by Jack Blacksmith

When exposed to air like any food product, coffee beans also oxidize. This effect is even more suffered by grounds than the bean as comparatively the surface area of the former is much larger. The freshest grounds are produced while being exposed to air for the least time when beans are ground at home. What you need instantly is what you can only griund.

Everything though comes with a price. Messy and time consuming are characteristics of grinding, so the best you can afford should be picked incase you decide to invest the effort for the reward to be reaped.

Crusher, burr and blade are the three wide categories of grinders.

Often a pestle and mortar of ancient-style is the mashing device of some kind in the third category. With difficulty the beans are crushed by them producing granule of very uneven size. If you have a choice this is not suggested.

Chopping and not grinding is what actually the blade grinders do. Finally, something like a small grain is created after the beans are sliced into smaller and smaller sections with a whirling blade. Sadly, the grains are of incoherent size and always too large.

First choice should be the first type. Small-but-not-too-small and consistent granule are formed when with pyramid-shaped teeth on a pair of motor driven plates are used to ground beans in the burr grinders. Speed of the grinding as well as the size can be adjusted in the better models.

To permit just the preferred brew adjusting the size is vital so that the grounds are ‘fine tuned’. The minimum warming effect can be kept by the speed getting controlled.

Burr grinders also classify into two classes- real coffee aficionados prefer the conical burr grinder. Allowing the most control of speed and grain size they are noisier.

Rotating slowly at 500rpm is what quality conical burr grinders can do. Contrastingly, blades spin between 20-30,000rpm and at 10,000rpm or higher other burr grinders spin. Little heat and very fine control is allowed by that. For Turkish-style brews it is particularly essential to have a fine grind. While some for the granule size adjustment have a sequence of up to 40 steps, others have a continuous dial.

Low noise, easy cleaning and solid construction are what the home barista will desire to look for outside those broad characteristics. It is essential to have removable upper burrs and a cleaning brush. The amount of static electricity produced depends on the diverse materials used causing the grains to stay attached to the container and burrs.

For judging the results in the grinder it is helpful when the grounds and the beans can be seen and an auto-shutoff with a timer switch is a nice addition. Obscuring the view though aesthetically appealing is the dark glass or plastic.

Most flavorful and freshest cup will be your reward if you are ready to spend a little more and read reviews on various grind and brew coffee makers.

Happy coffee appetite!

Fighting Food Cravings- A Realistic Look

by Lorelei Fenton

Every day as we walk around our world we see food addiction. We hear people proclaiming that whenever they eat pasta, or home-baked bread, or chocolate cake they just can’t stop. People are even prone to laugh at themselves and tell you flat out, they are addicted to something. But perhaps, when you really look at it, food addiction is not a funny thing. Perhaps if you look closely, you might even call food addiction a debilitating disease.

‘Debilitating,’ you might say. ‘That’s a bit extreme, isn’t it?’ Well maybe not.

Now in our society, it is very true that thin is in and fat is out. However you may also be a person who is a size 14, and wants to be a size 8. And you may know that size 8 is a good, healthy place for you to be. However, you may not be able to get there because you can’t, or won’t, stop eating the cookies, spaghetti, and home-baked bread. And for you, not being a size 8 is a problem. If this is you, then you are probably fighting food cravings.

Now you’re in a pickle, and your self esteem plummets. You ask yourself, ‘Do I have no will power? Am I a weak-willed glutton?’ Now you go on crash diets. You begin to starve yourself. Your blood sugar becomes sporadic. You begin to snap at the kids and growl at your husband. Perhaps you spend 2 weeks doing this before finally giving it up. Now you go out and eat. For two weeks you eat whatever you want, whenever you want. On come the pounds you lost, plus a few more. And your self-esteem plummets even more.

This is what a low-level food addiction looks like, before it becomes full-blown. As it progresses, obesity and binge eating often set in. The binge eating causes extreme waves in blood sugar, and a feeling of exhaustion and lethargy. This feeling follows food addicts through their entire lives. Binge eating will sometimes lead to bulimia, as the ‘fight to handle’ extreme cravings rages on. And this, of course, is a perilous place to be. Either way, most food addicts’ metabolisms are destroyed and diets no longer work, and self-esteem becomes next to nil.

People who take another path in food addiction often become anorexic. They decide it is better not to eat at all, than to fight the cravings, or be fat. This of course is life threatening. Now if you don’t become anorexic or bulimic, but you do continue in your addiction, by the age 60 you will be a diabetic. Your body will have used up its supply of insulin over the many years of carb abuse, and it will begin to deteriorate rapidly. In this case you will lessen the very years of your life, and those last years will be painful in myriad ways.

And this is the direction in which we are headed, even as we joke about being addicted to chocolates.

Well it may be time to stop laughing and start listening to our own jokes. I want you to know you can stop the roller coaster of fighting food cravings. Where I got off my own whirligig of was through a 12-step program for food addicts called Overeater’s Anonymous. There is also a program called Food Addicts Anonymous. Since this is a true and bona fide addiction that masses of our society live unhappily with, these programs are good places to start. You’ll also need a good Food plan, and a lot of other tools to help you on your way. But for information on this, you can look out for my subsequent articles.

Cooking Light: 3 Simple Ways To Start

by Greg Spence

Healthier cooking is all about how cooking light can improve your health without producing boring or unattractive food. Today, more emphasis is being put on reducing our calorie intake and eating foods that are better for us. In order to achieve this we need to look at cooking lighter which need not be difficult.

Thankfully, many staples are now easily available in low fat versions. From reduced fat Oreo cookies and cheddar cheese to milk and bread, you really do have many cooking light choices in several food groups. You can make your kids’ favorite mac n cheese and use skim milk instead of whole Vitamin D milk and use vegetable spread which has no trans fat as opposed to regular butter and you have already saved you and your family a lot of calories.

Opt for low fat mayonnaise or even zero fat alternatives like fat free ranch dressing and Miracle Whip as condiments for your dips and sandwiches. Use tuna packed in water instead of oil and you can see that by making small changes, you are saving calories left, right and center. And remember, just as calories add up, they also count when you are saving them in different ways.

Whenever you have a choice, opt for 100% whole grain as the first ingredient in the bread, muffins, rolls, and other such goods like pasta and rice you choose. Do not be fooled for bread that just looks brown; if it has enriched bleach flour as one of the main ingredients, then it is definitely not whole grain. Whole grain breads will not just be higher in fiber and lower in fat, they are also healthier for your heart and are proven to help protect against some diseases too. How’s that for cooking light?

Switch the oil you use when you begin to cook light. Even if olive oil is more expensive, try using a little of it and use no-fat cooking spray instead. If you must use more oil and olive oil is burning a hole in your pocket, try canola instead. It is very price competitive and has lots of health benefits as opposed to corn or vegetable oils.

When baking use a low calorie sweetener in place of sugar. Line your baking tins with a no fat cooking spray and use dark chocolate instead of milk. All of these are good alternatives for cooking light.
